Daniel J. Olenio, Jr., 67
HAVERHILL — Daniel J. Olenio, Jr., 67, a resident of Haverhill and a retired Lawrence Firefighter, passed away Monday, Sept. 19, 2011 at the Beth Israel-Deaconess Hospital in Boston.
He was born in Lawrence and was the son of the late Daniel J. and Marie (Tudisco) Olenio.
Dan was a graduate of North Andover High School, Class of 1962 and also attended Merrimack College and Northern Essex Community College.
He was a 26 year veteran of the Lawrence Fire Department and retired in good standing with several letters of recognition for action above and beyond the call of duty including receiving commendations for rescue efforts in the North Canal and performing CPR on a man down at Salem and South Broadway. He also served on the Essex County Sheriff's Department and an Correctional Officer.
Dan volunteered his services during the Vietnam War and served with the U.S. Marine Corps. He served honorably from 1965 to 1968 and received the Good Conduct Ribbon.
He was a member of the Andover Chapter of Disabled American Veterans, USMC League Massachusetts Chapter and the Cedardale Athletic Club.
Dan was an accomplished and published amateur photographer and also an antique car enthusiast and held multiple show trophies for his cars. He was also an avid bicycle enthusiast on both road and trail, and played in local police leagues, city leagues and town leagues of baseball.
Dan is survived by a brother, John D. Olenio and his companion Christina Brown of Atkinson, N.H.; a nephew, Jason Olenio of Atkinson, N.H. and a niece, Jana Olenio of Haverhill.
ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends may call on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011 and Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen. Funeral Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 23, 2011 at a time to be announced in St. Michael's Church, 190 Main St., North Andover. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Dan's memory to Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center, Doctor Tzachanis, Hematology - B.M.T.
