Residents escape burning building

By Jonathan Phelps jphelps@eagletribune.com

LAWRENCE — Firefighters made quick work of a blaze that broke out on the second floor of a Packard Street building shortly after 12:30 this afternoon.

There were people on the bottom floor of the two-story home at 3 Packard St. when the fire started, but they got out of the building safely. No one was home on the second floor.

A crowd of about 40 people gathered nearby to watch the flames that were shooting from the house.

The Lawrence Fire Department had the two-alarm fire under control shortly after arrival.
